Prom doesn't have to cost you a fortune; it cost me $18.

So you think you can’t spend under $400 to go to prom? Try $18.

Ever since I was a kid, I saw movies romanticizing prom as the best night of your life, the night of your dreams, the night you’ll never forget. Although this will be my first–and last–prom I’ll attend, I see it as merely a formal event to get all dolled up but also as a fleeting night I’ll look back on and think of it not as the best night of my life.

Because of my lack of enthusiasm for prom, I didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a one-night event in which I’ll never touch the items purchased again.

Here’s my prom shopping testimony:

I went to Goodwill the weekend before the deadline to buy a prom ticket in search of a dress. While I am very picky, I recognized my luck was low, probably non-existent. However, I stumbled upon a hand-beaded black and silver dress. It fit me like a glove, and at that moment I decided I’d go to prom.

I went back to Goodwill about a week later and found a size 7 silver pair of heels. They were practically brand new and perfect for this formal event.

Aside from the prom ticket, which was the most expensive ($75), I spent a grand total of $18 for my prom attire.

I plan to do my own hair and have my friend do my makeup.

So who says you can’t bargain shop for prom while also looking fabulous?
