Starting this year, Kayley Boan, junior, Mikhail Sims, junior, and Tess Hensley, senior, are coming together and forming a Literary Magazine called Coalescence.

Coalescence means many things coming together as one thing.

“We looked up beautiful words and decided from their meanings which one goes together, ” said Sims.

Some people think a literary magazine is just news or gossip.

“It’s a magazine that is going to showcase all of the students’ artwork,” said Boan.

There are so many things to incorporate into a Literary Magazine.

“It can be a poem, a picture, a short story, a list, a letter, it can be anything you want it to be,” said Hensley.

“There isn’t a rubric… Nothing too boring, nothing too provocative. We did have some exceptions as to like there’s limits we can put in , but we are very open to our suggestions,” said Boan.

Newspaper and yearbook are combining as one for this new addition.  They had to think of ways this will be produced and what the message will be.

“Kayley was actually the big supporter and she came up with the idea of me and Mikhail, and we decided to get on this crazy ride and make a Lit. Mag.” said Hensley.

Even though, it is just the three of them, they had some inspiration at the very beginning.

“Vincent approached us wondering if we would be interested in creating one. We were talking about doing the roles for newspaper… I had originally applied to be an opinions editor and then after about a couple of days , she’s like ‘well, would you rather do a literary magazine…I knew what one was, but we had no idea how to create one,” said Boan.

Every month, there is a theme for the submissions. During August, it was humor.

“We wanted something light to start off the school…We are trying to play off the season and what’s happening in those months…You get a month to submit and whoever wins will get a gift card,” said Boan.

Boan said they want to keep the themes a secret until it is that month.

“The best writing for us for creative writing comes when it’s spur of the moment…Even though there is a contest for the submissions every month by theme, you can also submit more… If you have something you wrote in ninth grade or eighth grade or tenth grade that you are proud of, if you want to send it in, send it in,” said Boan.

They are expecting more than just what the theme is that month.

They don’t have a large staff, so each of them have equal roles.

“We do everything,” said Hensley. “We’ve made submission forms. We have a semi-business manager. We have a folder, and that’s our business manager,”

Through learning with this new journey, they are hoping for a larger staff in the future.

“For the people I leave it to, I hope that Lit. Mag. can be its own separate class,” said Boan. ” It can have a staff. It can have an editor in chief… Right now me, Mikhail and Tess are limited to what we can do because we can’t stretch ourselves so thin.”
