As Earth day approaches, the yearly reminder that taking care of the Earth is essential draws near.

“Taking the school bus instead of carpooling is a great way to take care of the environment,” Dr. Katrina Pandya said.

Cars are a leading contributor to air pollution. They produce significant amounts of carbon monoxide that is released into the air we use to breathe.

However, putting the key in the ignition is not the only cause of pollution.

“I fenced off an area of my backyard to make it a compost and every once in a while, I turn it over, ” Pandya said.

Making a compost improves the health of the soil, resulting in less fuel consumption to till the soil. A compost also helps the soil hold carbon dioxide.

“Not putting fats, oils, and grease down your drain is also important. That’s a big problem that the Henry county water authority has to deal with,” Dickerson said.

Fats, oils, and grease is the number one cause of sewer system blockages in the area. These materials stick to the walls of the sewer system and build up over time. They end up doing harm and polluting streams and rivers.

Plastic water bottles and bags harm the environment in many ways. The manufacture of the plastic used in both products pollute the air. Synthetic plastic is also not biodegradable. The plastic sits in landfills further polluting the environment.

“You can be cognizant of plastic bags you use at the grocery store. You can use the reusable bags or a basket,” Pandya said.

Plastic bags used to hold groceries can harm the environment in a serious way. Toxic chemicals are released into the soil and eventually break down.

“It doesn’t cost money to recycle, it just takes time,” Pandya said.

Recycling minimizes pollution and reduces the amount of garbage we create.
