A father, a husband, a friend and a face that always smiles, Tony Head embodies everything a teacher should be. That is why it is no surprise that Head, math teacher, won semifinalist for Henry County’s annual Teacher of the Year.

“He’s the best teacher I’ve ever had. He really cared. If you wanted to learn, he made sure you would,” Meredith Greene, senior, said.

Greene took Head in her sophomore year and, while she is no longer apart of his class, Head continues to be a positive part of her life.

“He still brightens my day. Like, he says hey to me in the hallways, always outside of school, he’s always a nice guy,” Greene said.

Students, past or present, love Head’s antics in and out of the classroom.

“He’s very welcoming. No matter your skill set, no matter your friends, and stuff like that He makes it very easy to talk to him, whether it’s school related or not. He, like, becomes one of your friends while still being one of your teachers,” Casey Bixby, sophomore, said.

Bixby not only enjoys Head’s outgoing personality but also his class itself.

“He’s very creative in ways to teach each individual kid and not just the class. He finds a way to use art to represent math. Like, he’ll draw houses or flowers and actually make it apart of the math lesson that really just reaches out and makes it easier for every kid to understand,” Bixby said.

To others, Head is not only an amazing teacher, but he also is a fantastic coworker. Linda Bates, honors analytic geometry teacher and past Teacher of the Year, and Head have the privilege of working alongside each other.

“He’s awesome. Very encouraging, very positive, very willing to collaborate, try new stuff, share stuff. He’s a great person to work with,” Bates said.

Bates and Head, math teachers, have similar teaching styles.

“I think Mr. Head and I are both alike in the fact that we kind of teach like parents. It’s kinda like how I like to call tough love. We push kids, but we support kids. Being a good teacher is kind of like being a good parent,” Bates said.

Head agrees, stating that he sees his students as family.

“I have a wife of 29 years, one child of 20 years… Then I have 150 other kids. They all are in my honors algebra two classes,” Head said.

Head believes the reason he was nominated as Teacher of the Year was not him, but his students.

“I thought I could become a teacher and maybe have a positive impact on young people. But, the cool thing is, the young people had a positive impact on me,” Head said.

It delighted Head to represent Ola High School.

“It was an honor just to be nominated here at the school, then to be chosen at the school is even better, then to be a semifinalist, that’s just amazing. The whole thing has been just outstanding,” Head said.

Head will continue to brighten students’ days both in and out of the class.
